Explorers (Patriot ESU)

Patriot ESU was started in 2009 to provide our Scouts with four more exciting years with our partner group 4th Thorpe Bay, joint activities, camps and expeditions provided a good solid foundation.

The leaders actively encourage Explorers to become Young Leaders to help support a growing group. In 2010 we achieved our first leader and by the end of 2025 this number had increased to 15.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme (DofE) was introduced into our programme and it soon became clear that offering this type of opportunity engaged the Explorers in the community as well as given the additional life skills. Our unit has supervisors and assessors in all three levels as well as specialised expedition equipment. The most pleasing part of being a leader is young people achieving awards for their effects, 3 Queen Scouts, 1 King Scout 5 Gold DofE, and over 100 Chief Scout Silver and Bronze DofE awards as well as winning the Paul Clarke trophy 9 times in 10 years.

We are pleased to offer the Jack Petchey Award Scheme to recognise the achievements of our young people.

Over the past 16 years we have had over 30 Explorers selected to represent our county Essex and the UK in various jamborees and international trips.

Our leadership team is focused on offering a good balanced programme which is youth shaped and continues to develop as the unit grows.

County and National Scouting events are offered and encouraged.
