First Scout camp of the year!
Scouting skills weekend 16-18th July 2021
Erin and I were travelling in the car together and were about to burst with excitement. “This is it!” said Erin’s Mum. We jumped out the car, grabbed our bags (mine was so heavy it nearly made me fall over) and somehow managed to run over to the campsite. After we had put our bags down, we found out we had to put up a tent. My smile dropped as soon as I heard this; what were we going to do?
Luckily, Frazer helped us, without him we would have been sleeping on the grass. We got the tent up in about 10-20 minutes and started putting our stuff inside. We laid out our sleeping bags and put our blankets and pillows in the sleeping pod. After an exhausting last week at primary school, I wanted to fall asleep there and then, but knew there was lots more fun to be had.
I went to explore the woods and found out the older ones were sleeping in hammocks (I couldn’t do that)! For the rest of the day we just messed around until dinner, we had hot dogs and they were delicious. After dinner, we washed up and played manhunt. I couldn’t believe it, we won! Before we knew it, it was bedtime, we went to bed, chatted for a while and woke up at 7:30am for breakfast, we had pancakes with all sorts of toppings, they were amazing.
I spent a lot of the weekend ditch jumping, it was loads of fun. However, there were lots of activities such as: making fires, tying knots, chopping and sawing wood and paracord bracelet making. These were fun activities and useful skills for life.
For lunch each day we had wraps with: salad, ham, cheese, chicken and lots more. It was delectable. The days were hot and it just kept getting hotter and hotter, some people (including myself) had heatstroke.
The second day went by in a flash, we had pasta and meatballs for dinner and played games like: back to base, manhunt and card games. Feeling exhausted, we went to bed and ate some sweets.
Our final day at camp was mostly packing up. For breakfast it was pancakes with bacon and fruit with orange juice. However, the leaders organised a water fight. There were bowls and buckets filled with water for us to pour all over each other. This was incredibly funny and it cooled us all down a load. The only problem was that we had packed all our clothes away and couldn’t get changed. This meant we were wet for the ride home. We tried to dry off on a rope swing and played on it for around 30 minutes before packing up our tent and putting our stuff in our bags.
By the end of the adventurous weekend we were very hot and tired so went to sit in the shade until our parents arrived.
This camp was loads of fun and it was nice to have everyone there together.
